Starting tomatoes that actually ripen here

Davis County gets frost late in spring and early in fall. A tomato that needs 90 days from transplant is a gamble; one that needs 65 to 75 is a sure thing.

Wait for warm soil, not a warm afternoon. Tomatoes set out into cold ground sulk for three weeks and never catch up. Mid-May is usually right; a wall of water buys you two weeks earlier.

Plant deep. Bury two-thirds of the stem and the buried portion will root, giving you a much stronger plant.

Water at the ground, consistently. Uneven watering is what causes blossom end rot far more often than a calcium shortage does.
